Acting in Cases of Harassment

Harassment or inappropriate behavior can take many forms, including verbal or non-verbal insults, sexist or racist jokes, unwanted physical contact, threats or intimidation, unwanted communication, exclusion from the community or any other behavior that hinders participation in activities. The experience of harassment is subjective—what feels offensive or distressing varies from person to person. Therefore, the most important factor is how the affected individual perceives the situation. Tietokilta does not tolerate harassment in any form.

Harassment is never the victim’s fault, and no one should have to deal with harassment alone. It is important that harassment cases are brought to the attention of harassment contact persons. If you experience or witness harassment, try to tell the person responsible that their behavior is unacceptable.

It is always better to intervene than to remain a bystander, even if you are unsure of the exact way to respond. If you are hesitant to act alone, you can approach the situation with a friend. During an event, you can contact the event’s harassment contact person or organizer for assistance.

You are always welcome to contact Tietokilta’s or AYY’s harassment contact persons, even if you are unsure whether a situation qualifies as harassment. For further investigation, it may be helpful to keep records such as social media conversations. If the incident meets the definition of a crime, please contact the police.

Process of Handling Harassment Cases

You can report harassment cases to any harassment contact person of the guild, and all reported cases are addressed. The process is always confidential, and no information is shared without the affected person’s consent. The harassment contact person continues the investigation and decides on further steps together with the affected party and only with their consent. Possible actions, depending on the severity of the situation, may include:

  • With the affected party’s consent, the harassment contact person may inform the person responsible that their behavior has been experienced as harassment. All parties involved are heard fairly, and discussions remain confidential.
  • The harassment contact person may recommend that the affected individual seek further support from AYY’s harassment contact persons, YTHS (Finnish Student Health Service) professionals, or, if necessary, law enforcement. The decision to contact these parties rests solely with the affected person.
  • If the harassment involves university staff, Aalto University’s designated personnel are responsible for investigating the matter. Tietokilta’s harassment contact persons can provide support throughout this process if desired.
  • In severe cases and with the affected person’s consent, the case may be forwarded to Tietokilta’s board for consideration. The board may impose disciplinary measures as outlined in the guild’s Code of Conduct.
